Our long-term client relationship with Jacobs has led to a need for a Systems Safety Engineer on the JSC Engineering, Technology, and Science (JETS) contract at Johnson Space Center (Houston, TX).


JETS provides products and technical services related to human operations in space through development and integration of a broad spectrum of engineering requirements. This includes human spacecraft flight and flight development products, human exploration mission planning for NASA, institution support services, and new technology development.

The Systems Safety Engineer will:

  • Provide product and project safety expertise to Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) Flight projects and Payload Flight projects.
  • Act as an integral member of the Project Team for all phases of the project from project kick-off and development (SRR, PDR, CDR, etc.) through product delivery for flight.
  • Develop the initial safety assessment (Initial Assessment of Criticality), Hazard Analysis, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, and the Safety Data Package for the project.
  • Represent the project at all Safety Reviews and act as the project safety expert.
  • Present Safety Data Packages to the International Space Station (ISS) Payload Safety Review Panel (PSRP).
  • Provide high quality documentation deliverables per the project schedule.
  • Support safety document updates for modifications to existing flight products.
  • Support projects on other safety activities as necessary.
  • Work within established safety and quality frameworks to deliver quality work and safely operate within the organization.
  • Provide weekly accomplishment and status reports to the Manager of Flight Systems Safety.
  • Perform Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) manpower estimates for new projects.
  • Perform all other assigned duties.

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • BS degree in engineering or science from an accredited school and five (5) years of related experience, or a MS degree from an accredited school and four (4) years of related experience, or a Ph.D. in from an accredited school and zero (0) years of related experience.


        - OR –


  • BS degree in engineering or science from an accredited school and ten (10) years of direct experience, or a MS degree from an accredited school and eight (8) years of direct experience, or PhD. and four (4) years of direct experience.


        - OR –

  • BS degree in engineering or science from an accredited school and a minimum of fourteen (14) years of direct experience, or a MS degree from an accredited school and twelve (12) years of direct experience, or PhD. degree and nine (9) years direct experience.

        - OR –

  • BS degree in engineering or science from an accredited school and a minimum of fifteen (15) years of direct experience or MS degree from an accredited school and thirteen years of direct experience or Ph.D. degree from an accredited school and nine (9) years of direct experience.  Membership (or equivalent recognition) on an external technical society, committee/board.


  • Ability to work on multiple projects, within matrix team environments, and to demanding schedules is required. Examples of capabilities may be requested during interview process.
  • Possess strong communication and leadership skills.
  • System Safety experience in the aerospace industry.
  • Ability to develop fault trees and failure modes, effects and analyses using root cause analysis processes.
  • Possess a strong background in spaceflight systems safety and systems engineering.


  • System Safety experience at Johnson Space Center highly desired.
  • Degree in ME, EE, Aerospace Engineering, or Aerospace Safety.
  • Experience in Reliability Engineering highly desired.

Essential Requirements 

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Applicant selected may be subject to government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
  • Work may involve sitting for extended periods.
  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lb.
  • Must have sufficient mobility to enter areas of test facilities where necessary.
  • Generally an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
  • Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, fax, etc.)
  • Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical.
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
  • Must be able to work in a team atmosphere.
  • Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation.
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
  • This position may require some commuting and traveling to other installations as needed.
