Overview

Our long-term client relationship with NASA has led to a need for a Human Space Flight Systems Engineer on the Human Space Flight Technical Integration (HSFTIC) contract at Johnson Space Center (Houston, TX).

 

As an HSFTIC Systems Engineer, you will have the opportunity to support one or more of NASA's human spaceflight programs, including Commercial Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Development Program (CLDP), the Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility Program (EHP), the Gateway Program, the International Space Station (ISS) Program, the Orion Program, and more. You will also gain insight into all of these human spaceflight programs as a part of the Systems Engineering team supporting NASA in expanding humanity's presence in LEO and looking towards exploration to the Moon and beyond.

Our primary government work is with NASA and is conducted at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, TX and the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, AL.  Barrios employees make significant contributions to our nation’s space program by providing expertise that advances our presence in low Earth orbit and lays the groundwork for future missions to the Moon through our work on the International Space Station, Orion, Gateway, and Space Launch System.  Barrios employees are also actively participating in the growth of the commercial spaceflight industry through partnerships with Sierra Space, Dynetics, Northrup-Grumman, and Intuitive Machines. 

 

 

Responsibilities

The Human Space Flight Systems Engineer will:

  • Apply systems engineering principles and techniques to establish and perform systems integration activities such as requirements management, architectural design, author and review technical and engineering documents, memos, and presentations, and perform model-based systems engineering.
  • Establish working relationships with NASA leads, system managers, commercial teammates, and international partners to lead systems integration activities.
  • Provide technical systems knowledge and expertise during major project milestones and reviews to ensure systems can meet operational needs and supportability requirements.
  • Incorporate process improvement initiatives that promote the progression of SE&I expertise within a more digitized SE&I environment.
  • Build an understanding of the product life cycle to perform concept trade studies, requirements management, test & verification, and modeling and analysis.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • BS Degree in Engineering from an accredited Engineering school, plus two (2) years of appropriate work experience, or an MS Degree in Engineering in lieu of two (2) years of experience.

  • BS Degree in Engineering from an accredited Engineering school, plus five (5) years of appropriate work experience.

- OR -

  • BS Degree in Engineering from an accredited Engineering school, plus ten (10) years of appropriate work experience.

- OR -

  • BS Degree in Engineering from an accredited Engineering school, plus fifteen (15) years of appropriate work experience.

- OR -

  • BS Degree in Engineering from an accredited Engineering school, plus twenty (20) years of appropriate work experience.
  • Applied knowledge of product life cycle development, sound systems engineering & integration principles, and strong working knowledge of associated engineering disciplines.
  • Applied knowledge of systems engineering practices associated with the definition, design, development, verification, implementation, testing, integration, and validation of complex systems.
  • Excellent communication skills (in both written and verbal), integration, coordination and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with customers and stakeholders.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint).

Preferences:

  • INCOSE System Engineering Professional Certification.
  • Master of Science degree in Systems Engineering or equivalent engineering.
  • Knowledge of systems, tools, or initiatives that promote the digitization of the systems engineering & integration discipline, such as requirements management software (DOORS, DNG, etc.), workflow management software (JIRA, Confluence, etc.), model-based systems engineering software (Cameo, MagicDraw, etc.), or other digital tools (SharePoint, Confluence, etc.)
  • Working experience with Human Space Exploration programs (Gateway, ISS, Orion, etc.).
  • Experience with innovation or process improvements projects and initiatives.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple tasks concurrently.

Essential Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.

  • Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical.
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
  • Must be able to work in a team atmosphere.
  • Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation.
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
  • This position may require some commuting and traveling to other installations as needed.
