Overview

Barrios Technology has a need for a Benefits Specialist (hybrid role) to join the Corporate HR team located in Houston, TX.

 

The benefits specialist is responsible for assisting with the administration of all benefits and retirement programs, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, and 401(k) plan. Serve as the primary point of contact for employee leave of absence and disability requests.

Responsibilities

The Benefits Specialist will be responsible for the following:

  • Assisting with the open enrollment process and new hire orientation by distributing benefit enrollment materials, providing training and determining eligibility.
  • Enrolling employees with carriers and process life status changes, including providing Certificates of Coverage as needed.
  • Ensuring the accuracy of all benefits enrollments in the HRIS to provide vendors with accurate eligibility information.
  • Assisting employees regarding benefits claim issues and plan changes, including working with insurance companies to troubleshoot and resolve benefits issues on the employee’s behalf.
  • Responding to benefits inquiries from managers and employees on plan provisions, benefits enrollments, status changes and other general inquiries.
  • Processing and administering all leave-of-absence requests and disability paperwork: medical, personal, disability and the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA).
  • Responding to 401(k) inquiries from managers and employees relating to enrollments, plan changes and contribution amounts. This includes managing the annual catch-up contribution enrollment.
  • Providing necessary reports for allocation/billing charges.
  • Notifying the COBRA vendor of employees needing initial COBRA notice and employees needing COBRA qualifying event letters.
  • Performing all other additional duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Associate’s degree in HR or related field, but experience and/or other training/certification may be substituted for the education.
  • Minimum two years’ experience in benefits administration and leave management
  • Knowledge of benefits laws and regulations
  • Knowledge of payroll and HR procedures
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Ability to be tactful and empathetic with all levels of employees
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Proficiant with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources or related field of study.
  • Certified Benefits Professional (CBP) certification is a plus.

Essential Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Post offer applicants and employees are subject to testing for marijuana, cocaine, opioids, amphetamines, PCP, and alcohol as outlined in our Drug Free Workplace policy.
  • Work may involve sitting for extended periods.
  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lb.
  • Must have sufficient mobility to enter areas of test facilities where necessary.
  • Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
  • Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, fax, etc.)
  • Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical.
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
  • Must be able to work in a team atmosphere.
  • Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation.
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
  • This position may require some commuting and traveling to other installations as needed.
