Overview

The IT Security, Lab, and Procurement Officer will work in a collaborative engineering team environment and will primarily be responsible for implementation of lab IT security policies and controls in support of the team's efforts to develop, test, and produce high quality, integrated software loads for use onboard Orion and Gateway vehicles, starting with the Artemis II Mission. They will also be responsible for supporting the buildout and maintenance of the Exploration Software for Crew Operations (ESCO) lab, used to provide test beds for the development of crew-use devices for Artemis missions.

The ideal candidate must be extremely proactive, organized, hands-on, passionate about IT security, assertive, and detail-oriented. All members of the ESCO team must be passionate about the application of Information Technology (IT) to human spaceflight, be a strong advocate for the crew user, collaborative, and be willing to perform many different types of job duties as needed in order to accomplish the team's goals.

Responsibilities

The IT Security, Lab, and Procurement Officer will:

 

  • Manage Lab IT Device Configurations
    • Work with lead developers and systems architects to build and implement flight similar test switches, networks, and ground workstations 
    • Load and reload test equipment as necessary to ensure tightly managed configuration data 
  • Automate IT security processes to ensure minimal chance of human error
    • IT Security Admin (ISA)
    • Assist in the assessment, tailoring, and applicability of IT Security Controls from NIST 800-53 Rev 5
    • Identify and document plans to meet IT security controls
  • Manage other team members in performing the critical patching of Lab resources
    • Provision and manage lab accounts according to NASA approval process
    • Perform periodic internal audits of lab compliance to controls
    • Generate proof and artifacts as necessary to demonstrate compliance
    • Operate lab scanning systems and assist IT Security Officer as necessary
    • Perform virus scanning for new and visiting lab hardware
    • Manage the incorporation of monthly agency security patches to ESCO-owned devices
  • Procurement
    • Build and maintain cost estimates for realized and anticipated future inventory needs, including anticipation of life-cycle costs, failure rates, vendor support agreements, etc.
    • Become the expert in procurement; build relationships, maintain awareness of all available procurement sources: their schedules, processes, and organizational structures in order to facilitate efficient and cost-effective procurement
    • Anticipate future needs of the team and build proposals to make them reality
    • Generate, submit, and actively track procurement requests in a variety of procurement systems
    • Develop and present trade studies for technical/purchase decisions
  • Inventory Management  
    • Receive, label, and manage inventory per NASA property management principles to ensure that all equipment is properly labeled and identified and can be tracked efficiently
    • Create and manage effective labeling and organization systems, that maintain awareness of item location, configuration management, as well as support team member usage
    • Support and enable yearly audits by NASA and Contractor inventory management
  • Lab Configuration
    • Perform hands-on build out or rebuilding of lab test beds as necessary to meet testing needs
    • Configure lab test beds to exact specifications based on configuration managed products to support testing
      Anticipate and coordinate with user teams to ensure high quality test results
    • Maintain a safe, orderly and clean lab environment that can be presented to program managers, astronauts, or other high-profile guests with little advanced notice
  • Documentation
    • Assist in the development of training and reference materials for both ESCO and external teams
    • Accurately document test configurations and actions in CM system
    • Participate in the development/review of documents as necessary, including Work Instructions (WIs), general team/internal documents, procedures, etc.
  • Team Duties
    • Meeting support - Participate in meetings as a representative of the ESCO Team
    • Present technical and cost information to team members, external parties, and/or management for informational and decisional purposes

 

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, MIS or technically related area, or equivalent 2 - 5 years experience

  •  Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, MIS or technically related area, or equivalent 5 - 10 years experience  

                                                                                                               - or -

  •  Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, MIS or technically related area, or equivalent 10+ years experience

 

  • Must possess strong communication skills, both written and oral
  • Must possess excellent presentation skills
  • Must process strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a dynamic environment
  • Practical user knowledge of Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Word, OneNote, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Experience in configuring and/or administrating Microsoft Client and Server Operating Systems in a Lab environment
  • Practical experience in configuration and management of Cisco switches
  • Advanced knowledge of networking principles, including virtual LANs, port tagging, and access control
  • Experience in implementation of a variety of IT Security controls as documented in NIST 800-53, from physical controls such as procurement sources to access controls
  • Project management (ability to identify needed tasks, durations and resources to accomplish a project, then monitor through the schedule)
  • Hands on knowledge in configuring virtualized computer environments, such as Linux KVM or VMWare
  • Must be willing/able to teach/mentor as necessary

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Familiarity with cloud storage systems such as Box
  • Familiarity with DevOps tools such as GitLab
  • Microsoft or Cisco certifications desired
  • IT Security certifications (CISSP, etc.) desired
  • Experience with Agile Project Methodology
  • Position may involve some travel

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation

  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required

  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others
  • This position may require some commuting and traveling to other installations as needed
