We have an exciting opportunity for a Spacesuit Project Engineer to join our team with JETS II teammate company, Barrios Technology.

 

 

Responsibilities

The Spacesuit Project Engineer will:

  • Design and execute materials testing protocols for space suit fabrics and components exposed to lunar simulant,
    ensuring test fidelity to lunar surface conditions
  • Develop new test methodologies and refine existing procedures for evaluating material degradation, abrasion resistance, and dust infiltration in space suit systems
  • Lead data collection efforts using various instrumentation and measurement systems to quantify material performance under simulated lunar conditions
  • Perform analysis on test results and create comprehensive data visualizations to communicate findings to technical and programmatic stakeholders
  • Prepare detailed technical reports documenting test methodologies, results, and recommendations for design improvements
  • Coordinate shipping and receiving logistics for test articles, materials, and specialized testing equipment between facilities
  • Collaborate with space suit design teams to translate test findings into actionable design modifications and material selection criteria
  • Support Test Readiness Reviews and present test campaign status at meetings and program milestones
    Maintain test facilities and equipment, ensuring proper calibration and adherence to safety protocols when handling lunar simulant
  • Mentor junior engineers and interns on proper test execution, data analysis techniques, and technical documentation standards
  • Interface with external vendors and research institutions to procure specialized materials and testing services
  • Contribute to updates of relevant testing standards and best practices documentation for lunar dust exposure testing

 

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in Engineering and a minimum of 2-5 years of experience in the field or in a
    related area
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Aerospace, Materials, or related field) or equivalent STEM degree
    Demonstrated experience with testing of fabrics, soft goods, or flexible materials with particulate contaminants or lunar simulant
  • Proven ability to design and develop new test procedures and protocols
  • Strong data analysis skills with proficiency in statistical analysis software (MATLAB, Python, Excel, or equivalent)
  • Experience in technical report writing and creating professional presentations
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and present complex technical data to diverse audiences
  • Experience coordinating logistics including shipping, receiving, and inventory management of test materials
  • Knowledge of material science principles and failure analysis techniques
  • Understanding of space environment effects on materials

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in materials testing, preferably in aerospace or space environments
  • Experience with NASA or aerospace industry testing standards and procedures 
  • Familiarity with space suit systems and EVA operations
  • Experience with lunar simulant handling and safety protocols
  • Proficiency in data acquisition systems and LabVIEW
  • Experience with microscopy and surface analysis techniques
  • Knowledge of textile testing methods (ASTM, ISO standards)
  • Experience with environmental testing including thermal cycling, UV exposure, and vacuum testing
  • CAD experience (SolidWorks, CREO, or equivalent) for test fixture design
  • Published technical papers or presentations at aerospace conferences
  • Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE) methodology

Essential Requirements:

 

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation

  • Work may involve sitting for extended periods
  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs
  • Must have sufficient mobility to enter areas of test facilities where necessary
  • Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task
  • Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, fax, etc.)
  • Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required
  • Must be able to work in a team atmosphere
  • Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others
  • This position may require some commuting and traveling to other installations as needed
